Harmon was born into a poverty-stricken South Korean family. Her mother was a "mermaid" (also known as a sea woman). She spent 4 - 6 hours a day diving in the cold sea waters without a diving suit to search for and collect octopus, abalone, seaweed, sea urchin and other foods to sell and for their families to eat. Sea women, called "haenyo" in Korea, have existed for about 1,500 years. It's a dangerous profession that is passed on from mother to daughter.
Struggling to survive after the Korean War, Harmon pursued her goals of becoming a martial artist, obtaining an education and coming to the United States where her visions of success and economic independence became a reality.
