The Right to Bear Arms?
What Were the Founders Thinking?

Last year, there were 16, high-profile mass shootings in the U.S.  The Gun Debate has been a white hot topic, dividing our country.  For Beyond 50's "History" talks, listen to an interview with veteran, Gerald Petersen.  Many people today interpret the Second Amendment in a way that seems to be far different than the way it is written.  Petersen will explain why this amendment was written the way it was, what the original intent was, and thus know the real meaning of the Second Amendment.  You'll learn about the fears and feelings of the people of the founding era.  How did the people of this era understand self-defense?  The answer to this and related questions help to piece together the true Second Amendment.

According to Petersen, "It (the Second Amendment) was intended to protect the states.  It was for the self-defense of the states and the people of the states and not individuals.  The clause referring to the people’s right to keep and bear arms allowed the states to arm the people even if the federal government took control of the militias.  The final question should be whether or not we really need the Second Amendment in the face of how much our country has changed since its founding."
