Many of our crops and livestock have been genetically modified like a "mad science" project.  According to Matthew Stein of "When Technology Fails," he writes about how Nature has built-in safeguards to prevent tomatoes from crossing with avocadoes, monkeys with dogs, and flounder with tomatoes.  The modern genetic scientist has broken through this barrier.  For example, genes from a North Atlatnic flounder, which has a protein in its body that makes it resistant to freezing, were spliced into a tomato to make the tomato resistant to frost damage.
