PG-50+ Movie Reviews
Beyond 50 only recommends films that are creatively responsible to reveal the finest qualities of the human spirit; allow you to think and feel deeply about life; make your heart soar; and champion human rights.

A bizarre, edge of your seat film, it is based on the true story during the time of the Iranian hostage crisis.  The event took place a few months after demonstrators laid seige to the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.  Six U.S. consular officials escaped, taking shelter at the residence of a Canadian embassador for several months.  CIA Exfiltration expert Tony Mendez comes up with a cockamamie idea to save them: the six members will pose as a Canadian film crew scouting locations for their "Star Wars" - style space epic.  (In theatres everywhere; Genre: Mystery & Suspense, Drama; Running Time: 2 hrs.)

An engrossing story about destiny, the film is a mix of sci-fi and mob story that is set in the future, where time travel is used in secret by organizations to assasinate people.  In the year 2044, "loopers" are men ordered to stand and wait in a preset location at a particular time and await the arrival of a victim to be shot and killed.  The crime takes place 30 years in the past - making it untraceable.  The name "Loopers" is given to these Mafia assassins because they have also agreed to "close the loop" by killing their future selves.  (In theatres everywhere; Genre: Action & Adventure, Mystery & Suspense, Science Fiction & Fantasy; Running Time: 1 hr. 58 min.)

The Revisionaries
This is a compelling and engrossing documentary where the focus is on the Texas State Board of Education that is fueled by an elective body consisting of mostly right wingers manipulating their state's "standards" to push their  their ultra-conservative views on children, such as trampling the First Amendment, de-emphasizing Thomas Jefferson, promoting American exceptionalism, and denigrating Darwinism to make Creationism required curriculum. Unfortunately, Texas' textbook standards often, along with California's, dictate national standards. As Texas goes, so goes the nation?  (In Select Theatres; Genre: Documentary, Special Interest; Running Time: 1 hr., 33 min.)
