To Know Yourself is Key
Most developmental programs have one key message: know yourself and you will be happier. I agree, and 15 years working with individuals, couples and groups reveal the same conclusion. When I work with people, I find it immensely beneficial to help them make the distinction between sensations, emotions, assumptions and inferences and getting to the core “want or need” of any experience.


Most of the time, it's our emotions that overwhelm us. Emotions are linked to sensations and the meaning we make of any given situation. When we pause long enough to feel the sensations without adding the meaning, we interrupt the brain process that continues to hi-jack our stress response. This, in turn, creates more space to make a new choice.


As for inferences and assumptions, next time you are in an argument, stop and ask each other, “let's explore what assumptions and inferences we are making right now.” I believe you will find it quite revealing. The bottom line is if we don't address these 4 qualities, they will remain the unconscious captain of our ship and our happiness will be at the fate of our unconscious ocean.
