Anti-DepressantsHow to Safely Quit Anti-Depressants
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), antidepressants are the drugs most prescribed by doctors and hospitals in the United States - with more than 118 million prescriptions written per year. Many people believe the myth that once you begin taking antidepressants, you have to take them for life. For Beyond 50's "Medical Care" talks, listen to an interview with Dr. Michael Banov. He'll explain about how to taper down from high doses of antidepressants in a safe and effective way, especially if you suffer from a chronic form of depression.

The 24-Hour Diet
"Expert" Advice vs. Scientific Fact
The 24-Hour Diet:

Beyond 50 encourages you to eat well during the holidays. Through the help of Professor Brian Peskin, author of "The 24-Hour Diet," he likes to debunk a lot of erroneous ideas about nutrition that have been accepted as popular opinion. Here's some examples:

*Popular Opinion - Fats like butter nad eggs make you fat and clog arteries.

Scientific Fact - Natural fats like butter and eggs keep you lean and prevent heart disease.

*Popular Opinion - We require at least 8 - 10 glasses of water each day.
Scientific Fact - Wrong. This overdose dilutes your blood chemistry and causes you to be constantly hungry and overeat.

*Popular Opinion - Eat plenty of carbohydrates for energy before working out.
Scientific Fact - Wrong. Consuming carbohydrates before workout completely short-circuits fat burning and stunts production of human growth hormone that makes muscle.

*Popular Opinion - Eat small meals and snacks 6 - 8 times a day. This is the best way to lose weight and not be hungry.
Scientific Fact - The more often you eat, the hungrier you are. If you eat more than 3 times a day, you're on your way to becoming overweight and/or diabetic. The pancreas is designed to produce insulin just twice a day.

*Popular Opinion - Carbohydrates are your body's preferred energy source. You need lots of them.
Scientific Fact - Carbohydrates are non-essential. Your body makes the carbohydrates required from your own body fat and the protein you eat. No one ever suffered from a "carbohydrate deficiency." However, there are protein and essential fat deficiencies - unlike carbs, these must come from food; your body can't make them.
