Coupon Mom:
Cut Your Grocery & Pharmacy
Bills in Half

Coupon Mom

For Beyond 50's "Personal Finance" talks, listen to an interview with Stephanie Nelson. She is called the "Coupon Mom" for being a master at cutting grocery bills and drugstore costs in half. Her resource website has 2 million subscribers who want to save big and learn her strategic, money-saving techniques.

Here are some great tips you can use to save money:
  • Ask for manufacturers' coupons directly from the companies that make the food and household products you like to buy regularly. Almost all supermarkets will accept manufacturers' coupons, although some discount stores and food outlets do not.
  • Find out if your store doubles or triples coupons. They most likely do that every day of the week, up to a certain value.
  • Some stores do not double coupons but will accept expired manufacturers' coupons as an alternative.
  • Take advantage of a store's Rain-Check Policy.
  • Some stores will match competitiors' advertised sale prices, but it's up to you to ask. Wal-Mart will match other stores' prices, but you must bring in the printed ad showing the lower prices.
  • Ask meat, dairy, or produce managers about special sales or markdowns. For example, your produce manager might mark down yesterday's produce at 5:30 a.m., so shopping early pays off.
  • Wholesale Clubs (like Costco and Sam's Club) have a specific list of items you can't beat in price, compared to regular grocery stores. They are dairy products, fresh produce, baking ingredients, meats, bakery and deli items, betteris, frozen boods, plastic bags, garbage bags, snacks and quick meals.
  • For active and retired military, shop at military commissaries for incredible deals. Prices are 31 percent lower than traditional supermarkets.
  • Health food stores have unbeatable prices when you shop in their bulk foods area.
