Bird Watching with Beyond 50
Great Blue Heron

We encourage you to get outdoors for your own Spring Break to view migratory birds at a wetlands or wildlife refuge near you. We'll be heading over to the Shorebird Sanctuary within the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, a wintering area of thousands of waterfowl, raptors and songbirds.

For a fascinating conversation, we'll be calling on Irene Pepperberg to be on the show. Through her 30-year, loving relationship with Alex, a gray parrot, she unlocked the hidden world of animal intelligence. Alex's bird brain was the size of a shelled walnut, yet he possessed the potential for language, consciousness and anything remotely comparable to human intelligence. He could add, sound out many words and understand abstract concepts.

When Alex was dying in 2007, his last message to Irene was, "You be good. I love you."
